PCOS overview
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 6-12% of women of reproductive age. Symptoms include:
- Irregular periods
- Insulin resistance (70-80% of PCOS patients)
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Excess hair growth or hair loss
- Acne
- Fertility issues
- Increased risk of type 2 diabetes
Why GLP-1s help PCOS
- Improves insulin sensitivity โ addresses root cause for many PCOS patients
- Promotes weight loss โ particularly difficult with PCOS
- May restore regular periods โ through weight loss and insulin improvement
- May improve fertility โ by restoring ovulation
- Reduces androgen levels โ may improve acne and hair issues
- Reduces type 2 diabetes risk โ PCOS patients are at high risk
Effectiveness for PCOS
Studies show GLP-1s can produce significant improvements in PCOS:
- 5-15% weight loss (often difficult to achieve otherwise with PCOS)
- Improved insulin sensitivity
- Restored menstrual regularity in many patients
- Improved fertility markers
- Reduced testosterone levels
GLP-1s may be prescribed off-label for PCOS (no FDA approval specific to PCOS yet).
Special considerations for PCOS
Fertility and pregnancy
GLP-1s may improve fertility by restoring ovulation. If you're not trying to conceive, use reliable contraception โ GLP-1s may make previously irregular fertility unpredictable. Stop GLP-1 before trying to conceive (see our pregnancy guide).
Combination with metformin
Many PCOS patients take metformin. GLP-1s can be used with metformin โ may have additive benefits. Discuss with your provider.
Hair and skin
GLP-1s may improve acne and excess hair growth through reduced androgens. May take 6+ months to see effects.
Long-term use
Like other GLP-1 uses, PCOS treatment is typically long-term. Stopping often leads to weight regain and symptom return.
