Why protein bars are tricky on GLP-1s
Protein bars seem perfect for GLP-1 users โ convenient, high protein, portion-controlled. But most contain sugar alcohols (erythritol, xylitol, maltitol, sorbitol) that cause significant GI distress: bloating, gas, diarrhea, and worsened nausea.
GLP-1 users are particularly sensitive to sugar alcohols because delayed gastric emptying gives these compounds more time to ferment in the gut. A protein bar that a non-GLP-1 person tolerates fine can cause hours of discomfort for a GLP-1 user.
This guide covers what to look for and which bars are safe.
What to avoid
Check labels for these sugar alcohols:
- Erythritol โ most common, causes gas and bloating
- Xylitol โ causes diarrhea, also toxic to dogs
- Maltitol โ highest glycemic impact of sugar alcohols, causes bloating
- Sorbitol โ laxative effect
- Isomalt โ causes GI distress
- Lactitol โ causes gas and diarrhea
Also avoid:
- High fat content (over 10g per bar) โ triggers nausea
- High sugar (over 8g per bar) โ triggers dumping syndrome
- Excessive fiber (over 10g per bar) โ can cause bloating
- Artificial colors and flavors
What to look for
Ideal protein bar for GLP-1 users:
- Protein: 15-20g per bar
- Sugar: Under 5g
- Calories: 180-250
- Fat: Under 8g
- Fiber: 3-6g
- Sweetened with: Stevia, monk fruit, or real sugar (in small amounts)
- No sugar alcohols
Better alternatives to protein bars

- Greek yogurt โ 15-20g protein, probiotics
- Cottage cheese โ 12-14g per 1/2 cup
- Tuna pouch โ 16g protein, shelf-stable
- String cheese + apple โ 7g protein, portable
- Edamame โ 17g protein per cup
Protein shakes instead of bars

Homemade protein energy bites
Make your own with oats, {pchip("pb2_powder", "PB2")}, honey, protein powder, and chocolate chips. No sugar alcohols, full control over ingredients.
Best sugar-alcohol-free brands
When choosing protein bars, look for these brands that typically avoid sugar alcohols:
- Barebells โ no sugar alcohols, 20g protein
- Quest (certain varieties) โ check labels, some use allulose instead
- RXBAR โ simple ingredients, no sugar alcohols, but lower protein (12g)
- Larabar Protein โ minimal ingredients, no sugar alcohols
- Epic Provisions โ meat-based, no sugar alcohols, high protein
Always check the label โ formulations change. Look specifically for "sugar alcohol" in the nutrition facts panel.
