Make the most of your GLP-1 provider appointments. This checklist covers what to bring, what to ask, and how to advocate for yourself.

Before your appointment

Prepare your information

  • Current weight and recent trends (smart scale data)
  • List of all medications and supplements
  • Symptom diary (nausea, fatigue, side effects)
  • Food/symptom log if you keep one
  • Questions written down (see our question bank)
  • Recent bloodwork results
  • Insurance card and any prior authorization needs

Set clear goals for appointment

  • What do you want to discuss?
  • What decisions need to be made?
  • What information do you need?
  • What concerns do you have?

During your appointment

Be honest

Tell your provider about:

  • Side effects you're experiencing (even if embarrassing)
  • Adherence issues (missed doses, dietary struggles)
  • Mood and mental health changes
  • Any new medications or supplements
  • Lifestyle changes (new exercise, stress, etc.)

Take notes

Bring notebook or use phone to take notes. Medical information is hard to remember later.

Ask questions

Don't be shy about asking:

  • "Can you explain that again?"
  • "What does that mean in plain language?"
  • "Why are we making this change?"
  • "What are the alternatives?"
  • "What should I watch for?"

Confirm next steps

Before leaving, confirm:

  • Medication changes (dose, timing)
  • Next appointment date
  • Any tests or bloodwork needed
  • When to call vs. wait for next appointment
  • How to reach provider with questions

After your appointment

Review your notes

While fresh in mind, review notes and add any details you remember.

Implement changes

  • Update medication routine if changed
  • Schedule any recommended tests
  • Make lifestyle adjustments discussed
  • Update your tracking system

Follow up

  • If you have questions, don't wait for next appointment — call
  • If new symptoms develop, contact provider
  • If side effects worsen, call
  • If you can't adhere to plan, discuss alternatives

Advocating for yourself

You know your body

If something feels wrong, advocate for yourself. Providers have expertise, but you live in your body 24/7.

If you're not heard

  • Restate your concern clearly
  • Ask for explanation of their reasoning
  • Request documentation in chart
  • Consider second opinion
  • Switch providers if consistently dismissed

Bring support if needed

Bring trusted friend or family member to appointments. They can take notes, ask questions, and provide support.
